Writing etudes and practicing within limited parameters is a great way to learn to assemble your musical vocabulary. I recently received an email from an adult student of the saxophone with a question regarding transferring his musical ideas to his instrument.

He seemed frustrated because he felt that while he was able to whistle or scat his musical ideas, he was unable to locate these sounds on his instrument. In reality I believe that many students are capable of hearing ideas in the mind's ear that they may or may not have the musical vocabulary to reproduce on their instruments. So, my suggestion for these individuals is to experiment with what they know they can play. I've developed an exercise designed to help students make the connection between the mind's ear and their instruments.

By working with this exercise, players with a vocabulary of just a few major scales can begin to establish that link between their ears and instruments. Here's the exercise:. Play a major scale Next, learn to sing the same scale. Take your time, making certain to match the pitches exactly. You may wish to play and sing the scale several times to assure accuracy. Beginning with a simple passage, vocally improvise a phrase using only tones from this scale.

Next, locate your starting tone with your instrument and play the phrase. If you have difficulty locating your starting tone, try again by first establishing a starting tone with your instrument. As you progress, try starting on different tones. You should also experiment with ascending and descending passages, note length and varying intervals. Continue using this process as your musical vocabulary grows to include different kinds of scales i.

With a little creativity, you can even use this exercise as an aid in learning to hear and play chord changes. Students often experience difficulty bridging musical the gap between the mind and instrument.

Hopefully this exercise will provide students with a method for using their existing instrumental vocabulary to get in touch with the mind's ear. You can also use the altered scale, the half-whole diminished scale, whole-tone, or even Phrygian over a V7 chord, but each different scale implies different alterations, and different scales will work better in different musical contexts.

This is due to the relative consonance of the natural 6 from the Dorian scale versus the relative dissonance of the b6 from the Natural Minor scale. The exotic Locrian scale is the darkest, most dissonant mode of the major scale.

This scale is 12b34b5b6b78, and the natural 2 differs from the Locrian mode. All diminished scales are made up of alternating half-steps and whole-steps, but you can start with either a half-step or a whole-step. The half-whole diminished scale can be referred to as dominant diminished because it works well over a dominant 13 b9 chord. This mode of the diminished scale works well over a diminished chord. It works great over an altered chord 7 9b13, or 7altwhich implies 7 b9 9 11b Vibraphonist Gary Burton likes to remind us that the altered scale has a hidden tone, the natural 5th, that is also consonant with this scale.

The whole-tone scale only has 6 notes the 7th note would be the doubled root in the top octave. This scale implies a natural 9, a 11, a b13, and of course a b7. Lydian implies a 4. Dominant implies a b7. If you put them together, you have the fourth mode of the melodic minor scale! If you add an extra chromatic passing tone to a major, Dorian, or Mixolydian scale, you get a bebop scale. You can use the major bebop scale with any major chord. The chromatic passing tone is placed between 6 and 5.

D major scale? D min pentatonic? Being decent at the one of, or all of the above is a good thing but if these three things take up the majority of your practice time you are missing out on a lot of development in other areas of your playing.

All of which are bad habits that can be easily avoided by slow practice that is gradually increased over time. Alternate between a sustained 4 beat note and single crochets quarter notes in 2 bar loops focussing on accurate tonguing with constant air flow.

The trick with scales, especially if you know lots of them, is to spread different ones over different days rather than trying to play them all in one session.

Pick out an easy study, look over it for a couple of minutes playing some of the trickier parts and adding as much detail as you can. Then play it through from start to finish.

Try to work out a tune you really like by ear. This is a very difficult skill to start. When you first start consider getting notes of the tune a success here. You will improve at this over time. Choose something fun, a jazz backing track, playalong book, favourite study. This is a great routine as a default.

Figure out the patterns and keys and internalize it in your head, you can't take a piece of paper in to an audition. Ask yourself "C is the 6th note of which major scale? So C natural minor is the Eb major scale, but starting on C and ascending to C. Harmonic minor: Natural minor, but with a raised 7th Take the natural minor and lower the 6th degree and raise the 7th.

It is also a very useful mode to practice as the two chords in the example above also form part of a typical IIm7- V7 — I chord sequence. NB scales in improvisation should always be used as a starting point for inventing melodic patterns, and not used exclusively as scales. This is often thought of as the scale built on the second degree of a major scale.

In the context of modal music it is much better to think of each mode as a scale in its own right, not relative to a major scale. Each mode has defining scale degrees; eg a Dorian in D differs from a major scale of D in that the third and seventh degree of the scale are minor. It differs from D harmonic minor in that the sixth degree is major and the seventh degree is minor. So the defining notes of a Dorian are the minor third, major sixth and minor seventh.

The main essence of modal jazz is melodic invention rather than the harmonic expertise used in changes based jazz. In a Dorian sequence that consists of the two chords Im7 and IV7, improvisers often interchange patterns and scales so that a Dm7 pattern can be used over the G7, or a G7 pattern can be used over the Dm7.

This works well provided that the improviser is aware of the tension created by this kind of interchange and uses it appropriately. This is a stylistic issue, it is something that comes with experience and is often impossible to define.

Note that the same passing note is used for the Dorian and relative Mixolydian mode, so that they usually blur into one scale over the chord changes, whether a Dorian Im7 — V7 or a standard IIm7 — V7. This is the same as the Dorian but without the second and sixth degrees of the scale. Used frequently by Sonny Rollins in his post bebop period. A common scale in many forms of blues.

In the same way that the bebop scale was invented by adding a passing note to an existing scale, the minor blues scale is just a minor pentatonic with a chromatic passing note added between the fourth and fifth degrees.

It can be useful when used sparingly on a Dorian mode, major or minor blues sequence and is best when used to form licks rather than played as an entire scale. The same minor blues scale is used over an entire sequence, ie it does not change root with the changes of chord roots. Although it is arguably correct to use the key signature that gives the correct number of sharps or flats, it is often less confusing to notate a Dorian as an Aeolian with the sixth degree raised as an accidental where it occurs, as you would with a melodic minor.

Using this method a Dorian mode whose root note is G has 2 two flats not one, and the E naturals that occur are notated with a natural sign. As such they are useful for practising technique but should be used sparingly when improvising. Strive to create your own patterns for practising and while actually improvising. The examples are all based on a D Dorian Dm7-G7 but should be practised in all keys.
