Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad -- one of the most prominent faces of countrywide protests against the citizenship law -- today launched his political group, which he called the "Azad Samaj Party". Chandrashekhar Azad has been asked to leave Delhi within 24 hours of his release from jail and to stay out of the city for four weeks. Azad has also been banned from joining the protest at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, as he planned.

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, who had escaped from the police custody on Friday, was again detained early this morning. Eight of those detained by the police were minors aged between 14 and 15 years. Police said they will only be released, provided their parents come to collect them.
All the minors have been released. The police had resorted to lathi -charge and water cannons after a private car parked at Subhash Marg in Daryaganj was set afire as the protest turned violent. Sources said at least 36 people, including eight policemen, were taken to the Lok Nayak Hospital with injuries.
However, the police denied lathi -charging the protesters, saying that they only used "mild force" and water cannons. After prayers, they wanted to proceed to Jantar Mantar to protest but we tried to dissuade them, given that the capacity of the venue is under 1, and no prior permission was granted," news agency PTI quoted a senior police officer as saying. The officer said that the protesters dispersed from the Jama Masjid, apparently heeding to the police's request, but later reassembled at nearby Delhi Gate.

To counter the Bhim Army's plan to enter the political arena and erode the political base of the Bahujan Samaj Party, BSP chief Mayawati has convened a meeting of party leaders and office bearers in the first week of April. Mayawati, who is in in Delhi, is said to be keeping a close witch on the activities of the Bhim Army.
There are also reports that Chandra Shekhar has been in touch with some BSP leaders and plans to wean them over. During his Lucknow visit on March 2, the Bhim Army chief had indicated that he would join the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha, a united front launched by five small political parties in Uttar Pradesh for the next UP assembly elections in Bhim Army Chandra Shekhar.
